Third parties don't have a chance of winning the general election short-term, neither do write-ins; but they have a chance of personal victories in growth. The Libertarian Party (largest third party in the US) has been taking advantage of this election to try to sway more voters over to the LP or spread awareness of the LP, for example, and having more votes this election should help spread awareness of their party. In the United States, there are only two ways I can think of that a new party can emerge: one is by "glorious revolution," as we saw with the transition from Whig Party to Republican Party, and the other being a takeover from a relatively radical faction (a faction that would transform most of the platform) without a change in party label, for example, the socio-economic change in Democratic Party platform and policy from the 19th century to today, or even from the 1970s to today.

What are your thoughts on this election season and will your vote go to a former candidate, an independent candidate, or a third party candidate? Or, perhaps, if you're not from the US or not living in the US, would you vote third party or write in a candidate if you were living in the US? And a question for both groups: why would you do a write-in or vote third party this election (my reason is stated above)?

In Croatian election this year, people voted for in large for a third party... in sort of "rebelion" against the two main ones.

What happened next is the biggest political circus ever and funniest reality show we had in Croatia... because now no one could form the fucking government.

Many of my friends voted for the third party... arguing with me that that is the way to go, they were promising reforms etc. etc. ...while i said back then, that it would end up in shit and our lovely third party bride will have to chose one of the two big boys to marry so they can form a government.

So voting a third party ended up like not knowing... did they vote for a marriage with right wing or the left wing coalition and the third party ended up being a whore who selled to the highest bidder... which they quickly divorced actually and now we are going to new elections

Here, in Spain, we've always had same two political parties in the government. This year, finally, we've had something else to choose from. The result:

- First elections: 4 parties get the majority of the votes. No agreement between them, no government.

- Second elections: last Sunday we voted again. This time, the majority goes to 3 of those 4 partis, although the forth one still has some votes. I'm expecting 3rd elections this winter...

The libertarian party is a joke. Its funny though, even in the libertarian party it seems as if libertarians are split on which candidate they like.

Johnson, McAfee, and Petersen were their candidates.
Ultimately, Johnson won nomination from the Libertarian Party, likely because of Petersen's lack of political experience. Petersen did get the popular vote among libertarian voters.

I think he's a jerk. For example, Austin Petersen gave his prized George Washington replica black powder flintlock to Johnson as a gift in good faith and Johnson tossed it in the trash. Johnson also didn't hang out with Petersen and McAfee often, some times he did, but most of the time it appears he declined visiting them.
Johnson also has an inflated ego, with his belief that he has potential to win presidency the same way he became governor of New Mexico: by talking about how great he think he is. He carries this attitude of thinking he's the greatest politician and that he needs no one but himself. I do not like him at all.

In Croatia the third "party" actually signed a legal document, making a vow that they wont enter any post election coalitions with anyone... soon as they realised they won enough votes for their asses to sit in a comfy chairs and to dictate the outcome ...they broke their word.

You know i hate the "idea" of post election coalitions... every promise, stance, ideals, party programs etc. aint worth shit once it gets to a point of who sits where... suddenly left is right, right is left, center is waiting to see who has more candy in the hand...
Fuck democracy...

I hate the simple idea of voting for a candidate. Yeah, sure, I get to have fun by going to my school and vote. But once this person has a vote, it's him up there, not me. Someone is choosing for us. Simply retarded concept for a system called "democracy". We get to participate in a circus called "elections" but not on the real deal, laws and all that political bullshit.

Anyway, I'd like to correct something: left becomes right, but right becomes even more right! And centre is just a right in disguise.... What ever they say before the voting is futile, once they have the votes, they forget about everything else than their comfortable ass. It's a fact...

Well since we are criticizing our politics, i have few words to say as well:

We in Russia are lucky to have one dominant party in the parliament and in the government, because everything legislated, banned or done, then is accounted only to them and no one else, so we know when they are good and when they are bad. There are no actually second, third and fourth party in Russia, there is ruling party (voted by population) and the rest always make opposition to cry and blame the popular party until they get enough votes to enter the parliament. Second most popular party is Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF), but they cry like others.

I don't know how it is in the West, but in East Europe it's always like this - one party wins the most votes on the election and then all the rest parties create 'opposition' and demonstrate, complain and cry. Some of them even resort to insults and violence. Then sometimes they succeed in their goal to enter the parliament, one way or the other, if not, they keep 'the opposition' yelling, screaming and parading around until next election.

I am against 'coalitions' and multiparty system in the parliament because Quorum is not possible to achieve as Goblin stated above. I promote one party to rule, the one which collected the most votes, to be in the office with the term that particular country limit, and then on the next elections the procedure repeats. I lived in Greece while it was ruled by PASOK (Greek Socialists) and it was glorious times, prosperity, international reputation, respect and wealth. Now you can see Greece with multiple parties in the parliament, picking ministries like children pick toys.

When Putin retire, United Russia party will probably lose elections, and then KPRF, Fair Russia, LDPR and PARNAS will enter the parliament, creating coalitons, sharing ministries, dealing with whomever they want ignoring the people and their desires. And then the same will happen what is now going on in Europe, like Goblin and Raul told above.

Or i have to post youtube videos of Ukrainian parliament insults, splashing water and fights? Multiple parties in the parliament is circus, not politics. They fight on cameras and make deals in the halls. That's crime not democracy.

Party with most votes in the elections (NOT PERCENTAGE BUT PEOPLES VOTES) gets 100% parliament and government, if you don't like it, suck it up, wait their term to end and then make a proper campaign to make people interested in voting for you, show proper arguments against ruling party, inform the public and then you might win in the elections. If not, well that's democracy, atleast you can still claim moral highground to American dictators, African lords and Asian communists right?
