Allies in France: Lust, Rape, Silence and Impunity

Explosive new book:

-Debunks myth that the 'GI were manly and always behaved well'
-By 1944 women in Normandy 'filed complaints about rapes by US soldiers'
-Debauchery, lawlessness and institutional racism are chronicled in book
-Penned by Mary Roberts, a history professor at the University of Wisconsin
-Veterans Affairs rep says there is 'no way' to reprimand the U.S. soldiers
-Comes just after Sexual Assault Prevention Month in the U.S., where the military is under fire for string of high-profile assault cases
-Japanese politician also just claimed that American soldiers used their women as 'sex slaves' during WWII

Swapping stockings for kisses and teaching girls how to jive, American GIs were meant to be a welcome ray of sunshine in war-torn Europe.

But a new book has revealed the dark side of Europe's liberation after the Second World War.

Professor Mary Louise Roberts, from the University of Wisconsin, said within months of D-Day ordinary French women came to fear their American 'liberators'.

American soldiers seen here (who are not related to the book's content) disembarking from Coast Guard landing craft at the shores of Normandy. In an explosive book, Roberts claims that some soldiers terrified French citizens.

The professor said previous historical research on the subject paid little attention to this 'dark side' of Europe's liberation. The people in this picture are not related to the book's content

She tells how, by the summer of 1944, large numbers of women in Normandy filed complaints about rapes by US soldiers.

And their arrival prompted a wave of crime all over France, with American soldiers caught committing robberies and petty thefts.

Professor Roberts said: 'My book seeks to debunk an old myth about the GI, thought of as a manly creature that always behaved well. The GIs were having sex anywhere and everywhere.

'In the cities of Le Havre and Cherbourg, bad behaviour was common.

'Women, including those who were married, were openly solicited for sex. Parks, bombed-out buildings, cemeteries and railway tracks were carnal venues.

'People could not go out for a walk without seeing somebody having sex.

'But the sex was not always consensual, with hundreds of cases of rape being reported.'

The locals of Le Havre were shocked by the soldiers' behaviour and wrote letters of protest to their mayor.

One complaint, from October 1945, said: 'We are attacked, robbed, run over both on the street and in our houses.

'This is a regime of terror, imposed by bandits in uniform.'

Le Havre's mayor, Pierre Voisin, complained to Colonel Thomas Weed - the commander of US troops in the region.

'Scenes contrary to decency are unfolding in this city day and night,' Voisin wrote, adding it was 'not only scandalous but intolerable' that 'youthful eyes are exposed to such public spectacles'.

The mayor suggested the Americans set up a brothel outside the city to avoid public outrage and contain the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. However although US officers publicly denounced the behaviour they did little to curtail it.

The book also claims the US army 'demonstrated a deep and abiding racism', suggesting they pinned a disproportionate number of rapes on black GIs.

Documents show that of 152 troops disciplined by the army for rape, 130 were black.

Professor Roberts said: 'American propaganda did not sell the war to soldiers as a struggle for freedom but as a sexual adventure.'

She points out that The Stars and Stripes, the official newspaper of the US armed forces, taught soldiers German phrases like 'waffen niederlegen' meaning 'throw down your arms'.

However the French phrases it recommended to soldiers included 'you have charming eyes,' 'I am not married' and 'are your parents at home?' US magazine Life even fantasised that France was 'a tremendous brothel' inhabited by '40,000,000 hedonists, who spend all their time eating, drinking and making love'.

A cafe owner from Le Havre said at the time: 'We expected friends who would not make us ashamed of our defeat. Instead, there came only incomprehension, arrogance, incredibly bad manners and the swagger of conquerors.'

The author claims that when the first soldiers swarmed ashore at Omaha Beach in Normandy (pictured) on D-Day, it was 'a veritable tsunami of male lust'

Rapes are sadly pretty common, on every front in every war

Ask the poor Germans women when they got liberated by the red army

It's good that we aknowledge that the Americans weren't better, far from the Hollywood movies

The germans, or in any liberated country, wanted to rather surrender or be liberated by the americans than the soviets.
The soviets literally occupied/ subdued eastern europe, after their short- lived independence.
Rape or attrocities happen all the time, but it is no secret that people would rather go to the americans to surrender than the soviets.

The real heroes were the Soviets, millions died in fighting Nazism and it was the Soviets who dealt 80% of German casualties, it was the Soviets who destroyed most of the axis machinery in Eastern Europe and it was the Soviets who captured Berlin and raised the banner over the reichstag, the Americans joined late and their only "significant" contribution was their fight against japan but even then the Soviets played a key role in ending the war in the Pacific earlier and prevented hundreds of thousands of Americans from dying as a result of their invasion of Manchuria.

u realize that the soviet did pay back blood for blood. we are trying t avoid bloodshed when there are madmen trying to provoke it. so as well as the holocaust and the holodomor. many thousands died in those atrocities the Chinese great leap forward. blood is lost everywhere. but we must try to avoid mass bloodshed and try to limit casualties by not provoking more wars.

there is a saying that if u only want to meet with people who never sin and only do good deeds. then you meet with statues and stones. there has been no country that has not done atrocities. the soviets had raped and plundered eastern europe. the americans were in a blood lust after witnessing D-day. u cannot be more wrong americans did rape and pillage in normandy but at the same time. which country has never pillaged nor looted in foreign enemy lands. from way back to the egyptian pharoahs to modern day iraq. every country has commited some sort of violent crime that they might never accept.the french have the imperialist ambitions and brutal take down of uprisings. americans have this. japan has nanking. china has the great leap forward. russia has holodomor, germany has the holocaust and so on. u cannot blame one nation for its atrocities when the nation u live in might have done some horrific actions in some period of time.

The USA didn't kill it, the USSR collapsed as a result of traitorous liberal leadership who went against everything the USSR stood for ideologically speaking.

I like how all haters started accusing soviets with literally anything... literally you say anything about westerns did bad and they ignore and start accusing soviets with their lies... you tell them about hitler, they start telling you about stalin like whats the connection? why are you trying to rehabilite hitler by attacking stalin? (all lies btw), you tell them about wehrmacht's war crimes and how did western countries allow those criminals in their country and rehabilited them, allowed them in army especially in nato, they start accusing red army doing something ''wrong'' like what are you trying to do? whats the connection between this and red army? its literally, literally everything you tell them about their past, which all is true without doubts, but they all ignore the facts and keep blaming stalin and red army with their made up propagandas. you tell them about 3 million red army soldiers died in prison camps and instantly they start complaining about how some wehrmacht soldiers and officers were held in prison camps in siberia till 1955. this guys have no idea what we are talking about and what we are trying to say, all they care is blaming stalin or soviets and we all know why they get butthurt about stalin and red army

You are good at framing.
Make u would a good KGB soldier. - yoda

ps. stalin raped, degraded, abused, tortured anything that was eastern europe including russia. But it seems that stalin lovers do like that :)

Nah, he is half right. The USA with all its power in keeping USSR in check couldnt bring USSR down. However, it is too simple to blame Gorbachov for the demise of USSR. Perestroika and glasnost are always falsely put into pieces. They need to be taken into context when describing historical events. Gorbachov had many factors which he could not have foreseen while implementing his actions. First and foremost important external effect leading to the demise of USSR is the oil crisis of the 80s. One could even say the date of USSR' collapse is not 1991 but it is in 1985, when S.A. oil minister declared they would leave the oil cartel and thus increase their production, by 5 fold and making oil prices decrease by 6 fold, effectively killing USSR economy singlehandedly.
Secondly, chernobyl effectively destroyed the trust of ordinary soviets in their government officials. Remember one of Gorbachovs actions were Glasnost (openness), yet the external effect of chernobyl and its handlings were far from anything resembling openness.
Third, soviet citizens support for capitalism and democratization. One picture would define this perfectly. Just search for a picture of the opening of the first mcdonalds in moscow. https://sputniknews.com/photo/202002011078199527-mcdonalds-anniversary-ussr-first/
Look at the queue, it was even in january. It sums up the hunger for something they lacked. Another example would be Hollywood movies being shown in Moscow. The food, the cars, the consumerism in movies like Dallas made the soviet citizens want that as well. These things became mainstream ackknowledged now.
So in sum. Gorbachov had great ideas for USSR, he never wanted the USSR' demise, the external factors made the downfall possible. No leader could have stopped the eventual demise.
