The United states is a republic not a democracy.
I'd suggest you study some political basings. The common fail the common individual commits is stating an equivalence between Republic and Democracy. They're not equivalents, because political regime is one thing, system of government is completely other stuff. Constitutionalists and their Doctrine as we call in Law and Constitutional Law widely converge on the fact that Political Regime =/= System/Form of Government. (Though I'll use System of Government)
Political Regime is essentially the way the State is organized to pursue Society's goals, it's basically how the state and its institutions are composed and how the political power (autorities, the administrators) relates and communicates with the people, the administered. It's basically how the institutions are set and the relation between the Institutions and the people, aka this is a larger spectre perspective.
System of Government is, according to the Doctrine the way and how political power relates within itself and between the powers it countains (supposing Montesquieu's separation of powers theory though), particularly how the legislative and the executive power communicate and relate to each other (since the judicial power is sacred, independent and impartial).
Political Regimes, the larger spectre can be divided in two large groups: Monarchies and Republic, showing how converging doctrine is with the actual facts.
System of Government is the inner spectre of a political regime, how, within a certain political regimme, the government is systematized, how it relates with each other. Examples of these are Parliamentarism (with its variants, but we'll use Great Britain as an example or Denmark, or Germany), Presidentialism, with USA being a model (there's more Presidentialist states in the world btw) and Semi-Presidentialism, like Portugal and France (I can explain those later if you want or if needed xd)
There's however more to it, Democracy is a system of government, it structures how political power relates to and between itself and how the people in some way can afford that, it's a system of government and not a Political regime as you are claiming indirectly by comparing democracy to a republic,there's of course many ways of conducting politics via a democratic base, as there's various types of it, like Direct Democracy and Semi-Direct (Switzerland in way) or Representatitve Democracy which we generally endorse that is submitted to the core ideas of our countries political regime.

I'd also admit you refer to true democracy as a Direct Democracy? That's a phalacy based on ignorance. In all democracies every individual has 1 vote and 1 vote only, except germany, where you have 2 votes, 1 for a chamber, 1 for the other. Demoliberal regimes of the 19th century were the ones where individuals didn't have equal voting power. Direct Democracy is the "true" and raw democracy, where the people take part in all major decisions cuz the Governments submit them to referendums, though this form of democracy has lots of objections such as the impossibility of repeatedly hold referendums cuz of its cost.

I didn't make any point you made previously jesus christ, I simply meant that the Electoral College process is a form of indirect representative democracy, it's thus a GENRE of democracy, what part of that can you not get?
Your Republic is indeed a Democracy, as it with varying intensivity of the Democratic Criteria, they indeed exist in your country.

Systems of Government: Presidencialism (US) Parlamentarism (UK for example or Canada) and Semi-Presidentialism (France and UK) & Democracy, with it sub-variants (Direct, Semi-Direct, Representative, Deliberative, Consociativistic (english?) with Representative Democracy varying depending on its electoral system on being of direct legitimation of the People's Representatives (e.g. French Presidential Elections) or Indirect legitimation, a derived democratic legitimacy by the people to the Electoral College to then elect the President (US)
