I am aware of the ROLES, or the general idea of what the Unit Types are, but I am wondering what they do?

As in, how can I have supports that give +1 attack to other units, what do commanders DO actually? How do they effect stats, etc...

I can not find documentation anywhere. If I am blind, please bring forth the light.

Here is the page that shows the basic unit stats: http://atwar-game.com/home/units.php

Commanders give boosts to the stats of the basic units found in the link. A naval commander will boost destroyer stats, for example.

I think you are missing the point, I am asking for a way to know exactly what the unit types do to the stats, the formulas for how they calculate hits, crits, etc, all the needed info to correctly balance custom units.

For example, Main Defense, and Special Defense, what the hell is the difference, what does a commander actually do?

Gonna bump this, As I said before the game mechanics for handling things like, damage, crits, and such, has never been fully explained, nor has the way the game handles the different unit types, and there special properties. If anyone can shed some light on this, please do.

As unit type has specific caps on certain stats (EX: X can only have 5 - 10 attack, but Y can have 7 - 12 attack). This is to keep balance and non-farming or something/other like that. They are basically roles to fill, but other than having caps on specific stats, they're practically useless for anything but organization.
