A completely different explanation of the latitude/wealth correlation might have to do with agriculture, if partially indirectly. In order to develop the industrial and service sectors of the economy, agriculture needs to be sufficiently productive that not too many people need to always be working the land. The modern agricultural techniques that enable that are best developed, and the knowledge mostly widely spread, in and for temperate climates. Tropical agricultural science is less developed, but perhaps even more importantly, knowledge of it is not widely dispersed in the tropical region. (Also, as for techniques that require capital investment and/or patience, unstable property rights may not be helpful either.) Much of this comes from some casual conversations with my uncle, who is a agricultural engineer specializing in tropical agriculture, so I don't have any good written references.

How is this at all relevant? Tropical climates have lesser development? It didn't stop the Mayans. In actual fact, colder climates have higher intelligence. The reason is obvious, its harder to survive so only the smartest (more adaptive) survive and breed more. Central Africa had none of these issues with survival. It was a paradise of resources. It's funny how the Mongols dominated most of Eurasia and they were a nomadic people who lived on open plains. You don't see that in Africa. Hell, they didn't domesticate a single animal. Not one. Almost any animal can be domesticated. Colonialists domesticated Zebra within a few generations. And if you are going to argue that the African climate creates more aggressive animals because then you are shooting yourself in the foot and admitting African people can be more aggressive. Your choice.

The same guy: It's rare in the social sciences to find data as clear-cut as this graph. As you can see, it's not so much Africa that's poor, but any place close to the equator is poor. And much of Africa happens to be close to the equator. Of course, re-framing the question doesn't answer it, but it is going to point the way to some interesting hypotheses.

Africa was pretty wealthy under Colonialism. Rhodesia was its breadbasket and now it cant feed itself. We've had this conversation before and you couldn't even reply after the utter rogering you got from it.

Before we go any further, let me point out that lack of capital (i.e. investment) is never an explanation of poverty all by itself. It can only be an explanation if you combine it with an account of why capital cannot flow in from other places. The reason is that if two places are similar in (potential) productivity, but one has a shortage of capital, then the returns to capital are going to be higher in that one (i.e. people are willing to pay a higher interest rate), and rational investors should move their money to that place until the interest rates equalize.

People don't invest in criminal hellholes. They'll invest in African resources but not in its population.

I point out the insufficiency of the "they have no money" argument because I often find implicit in discussions of third-world poverty that the problem with poor countries is simply that they "don't have any money" to buy farm machinery, or seeds, or industrial machinery, or infrastructure, or whatever.

Africa was provided with these. Not only were they left behind by colonialists but Africa receives enormous aid. They refuse to learn how the machinery works and usually buy new ones rather than investing in fixing it. Many of these countries are corrupt and as long as the people at the top are happy, they don't about the people below.

I see in one of the answers the claim that colonization made Africa poor, but strangely enough, it is the poor countries close to the equator that were often colonized late and half-heartedly, with more emphasis on quick extraction of resources (or slaves!) and less on settlement and the building of lasting institutions or infrastructure. Yes they did. The Caribbean run by the French exported huge amounts of sugar. Africa did the same. Institutions? What institutions did they have? They barely had a written language unless they were influenced by Arabs. It's land was incredibly fertile and given enough time, they would have expanded in agriculture. South Africa had more time to develop compared to other colonies. Slaves? What period? Slavery was banned when colonialism was at its peak. Most slave trade came from small coastal settlements where slaves of African tribes were sold there. Excuses, excuses. Colonial Africa was an economic powerhouse and would have grown stronger given more development.
